Tilt-Head vs Bowl-Lift: Which KitchenAid Mixer Do You Have?
Share
Before buying accessories or a bowl liner, the thing that actually matters isn't just your mixer's quart size, it's which of the two KitchenAid mixer styles you own. The two styles use different mechanisms, and that difference affects bowl shape even when the capacity is the same.
The two styles
Tilt-Head mixers have a motor head that tilts back on a hinge, giving you access to the bowl from above. This is the more common style for home kitchens. Tilt-Head mixers only come in 3.5, 4.5, or 5 Qt sizes, KitchenAid has never made a Tilt-Head mixer larger than 5 Qt.
Bowl-Lift mixers keep the head fixed in place. Instead, the bowl itself is raised and lowered using a lever on the side of the base. This style is built for larger capacity and heavier mixing, and it's available across a wider range: 4.5, 5, 6, 7, and 8 Qt.
Why this matters even at the same quart size
Here's the part that trips people up: Tilt-Head and Bowl-Lift mixers use differently shaped bowls, even at the same capacity. KitchenAid has made 5 Qt mixers in both styles over the years, a 5 Qt Tilt-Head and an older 5 Qt Bowl-Lift, and the bowls are not interchangeable between them. An accessory sized for one won't necessarily fit the other, even though both are labeled "5 Qt."
Because of this, checking your quart size alone isn't enough. You need to know which mechanism your mixer uses.
How to tell which one you have
Look at how you access the bowl:
- Head tilts back on a hinge to expose the bowl → Tilt-Head
- Bowl itself moves, raised and lowered by a lever while the head stays still → Bowl-Lift
If you want to confirm further, the model number is printed on a sticker on the underside of the base (tilt the mixer onto its side on a towel to check).
What this means for MIXAID™
MIXAID™ silicone bowl liners are made to match specific bowl shapes, not just a quart number:
- 5 Qt liner set is made for the Tilt-Head 5 Qt bowl. It will not fit the older 5 Qt Bowl-Lift mixer, that bowl has a different shape.
- 7 Qt liner set is made for the Bowl-Lift 7 Qt bowl. KitchenAid has never made a 7 Qt Tilt-Head mixer, so this is the only 7 Qt style that exists.
Confirm which mechanism your mixer uses before ordering, that one detail matters more than the quart number by itself.
